Allan Guttman trained as an actor and musician. As the musical director of Second City Toronto, he worked with Del Close, Gilda Radner, Catherine O’Hara, John Candy, Joe Flaherty, Andea Martin, Eugene Levy, and Bill Murray. He was also the founding artistic director of Toronto Second City’s Training Centre. During the seventeen years he held that post, Allan taught Improvisation to Mike Myers, Colin Mochrie, and the members of the Kids in the Hall, as well as to several generations of Second City performers. He has also directed there.
Allan was co-artistic director of the Actors Workshop in Toronto, whose guest teachers included Uta Hagen, Joe Chaikin, and Robert Lepage. He was also a co-founder of the Humber College Comedy Program in Toronto, and was its co-ordinator for five years. In addition, Allan has taught at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts(California), the University of Southern California, and the Actors Studio Drama School in New York.
His efforts as a producer, writer, composer, lyricist, director, and musician have been presented at theaters in New York and across Canada, as well as on radio, television, and recordings.
